As the weather drops cooler over the coming months, more people will suffer with dry eye symptoms such as watery and irritated eyes. This if often due to many environmental factors such as the weather changing, cold winds and the increased use of heating in our houses, office and in the car.
There are a few simple things you can do over the colder months to help alleviate your symptoms and keep your eyes happy and hydrated throughout Autumn and Winter.
- Hydrate – Keep moisture in your eyes by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. It is recommended that we drink at least 6-8 glasses of fluid per day, this can be water, tea, coffee and sugar free drinks.
- Watch out for heating – When the weather drops colder, we automatically put the heating on at home, in the car and at the workplace however this can contribute to drying out your eyes. Add some moisture back into your eyes with preservative free eye drops. To find the most suitable eyedrops for you, speak to your Optometrist.
- Add moisture back into your environment – Using a humidifier will add moisture back into the air, helping to reduce dry eye. You can get a variety of humidifiers for your car, workspace, and home.
Just as we wrap up warm and protect the rest of our bodies from the cold during Autumn and Winter we should do the same for our eyes.
